Rejuvenating a Countryside Garden at a Historic Mansion
After completion, the garden is both abundant and beautiful.
The existing kitchen garden at a historic stone mansion in Upper Marlboro was in a gorgeous location, with perfect sunlight and sweeping countryside views—but it was in need of a rejuvenation.
Beds were too shallow, set directly on the lawn (creating heavy weed pressure), and the deer fence was too low to protect the plants. The client, with a deep love of the cuisine of her Italian roots, wanted guidance on planting practices to ensure a steady supply of fresh, flavorful ingredients. Together, we transformed the space into a productive, beautiful, and harmonious garden, successfully growing eggplants, peppers, tomatoes, carrots, salad greens, and a variety of herbs—bringing the flavors of Italy straight from the garden to her kitchen.
A dream location in need of a glow-up.
Addressing the Challenges
To maximize both productivity and visual appeal, we implemented a combination of raised and in-ground beds:
4 raised beds (8’ x 4’, 22" deep)
2 raised beds (8’ x 4’, 11" deep)
2 in-ground beds
The beds were placed on an organic foundation of mulch, with sod walkways and composite edging marking the transitions between paths and beds which gives the garden a natural, inviting feel that complements the countryside setting.
For structure and support, I provided pre-cut cedar boards, rich soil from Veterans Compost, and trellises—including a central arch and nine obelisks. The client chose her own plants, and through our collaboration, the garden quickly evolved from a space in need of care into a thriving, abundant oasis.
Installation and Layout
All beds were installed and filled in a single day, with weed fabric lining each box for added soil health. Symmetry guided the layout: a central arch anchors the design, with a bench at the far end providing a peaceful spot to enjoy the views. Beds of varying depths accommodate diverse crops—from leafy greens and root vegetables to seasonal favorites like broccoli raab.

Beauty and Abundance in Action
This kitchen garden is a celebration of both productivity and aesthetics. Fig trees frame the space, adding charm while allowing sunlight to nourish the crops. Multiple bed depths make crop rotation simple and support a variety of vegetables and herbs. The central arch, trellises, and bench add structure and elegance, making the garden a place to both work and relax.
Thanks to careful planning and collaboration, the garden consistently yields fresh, flavorful produce—including eggplants, peppers, tomatoes, carrots, salad greens, and herbs—perfect for creating meals inspired by the client’s Italian roots.
A Stunning Transformation!

Lessons Learned
This project highlights how thoughtful design and collaboration bring out the best in a garden:
Protection ensures abundance: Taller fencing keeps plants safe and productive.
Foundations shape longevity: Organic mulch supports a natural look, while mineral foundations like gravel can add durability.
Details matter: Narrower 4" trim boards provide stability and a polished finish.
Seasonal planting maximizes success: Timing crops like brassicas for fall ensures strong yields.
Collaboration elevates the result: Working closely with the client brought her vision to life, creating a space that is both beautiful and highly productive.
With nearly 200 square feet of growing space, this kitchen garden demonstrates how collaboration, design, and attention to detail can turn a space in need of rejuvenation into a thriving, abundant, and visually stunning retreat—one that produces fresh ingredients and celebrates the flavors of Italy.
